AMASSI: A Center for Black Self-Empowerment
Self-esteem is a major problem for many same-gender-loving African Americans. Along with dealing with a biased and oppressive society that challenges each individual to face and fight racism on a daily basis, the history of their ancestors as exploited enslaved people right here in America may contribute to their feelings of low self worth. The situation is increased when sexual identity may exclude them from their African American culture and American society in general because of the prevalence of gender oppression. It is in response to these crises of identity, as well as the historical and present violence and oppression that affects people of minority identities, that AMASSI functions within the community. AMASSI and its founder, Cleo Menago, have an agenda of building the self-worth and self-esteem of oppressed minorities.
