Boy Scouts

Last year, over four million youth participated in Scouting programs in the United States. Chances are that you, or someone you know, is a member of the Boy Scouts. As Eagle Scout Steven Cozza Says, "The Boy Scouts of America is a great program with one bad thing. It discriminates against gay youth and adults."

Does Every Troop Discriminate?

No. It is the policy of the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America to exclude gay scouts and leaders. Not every troop strictly adheres to this policy. Some troops operate under a 'don't ask, don't tell' basis.

Still, if you disclose your sexual orientation to your troop, there is a possibility you'll be kicked out of Scouting. This mostly happens in the United States. In many countries, everyone is welcome to participate in Scouting regardless of sexual orientation.

I'm Gay. Should I Quit Scouting?

For a lot of young gays, this is a difficult decision. If you're not 'out' yet, it's probably not a big deal, but if you're coming 'out', it can make the process a little more complicated. Some guys decide to take the old 'don't ask, don't tell' approach. Others only tell friends and scout leaders they know will be supportive. Some gay scouts and scout leaders have taken a stand and publicly challenged the ban. This is a decision you'll need to make for yourself. If you do stay in Scouting, contact Scouting For All for support.

What If I Get Kicked Out?

It feels bad to get kicked out of a group like the Boy Scouts, even when you know it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself. Remember, this has happened to lots of gay guys just like you. You may feel sad, or angry, and you have a right to those feelings.

You may decide you want to fight back. If so contact Scouting for All and let them know what happened to you. If you have been denied your Eagle Badge because of your sexual orientation, Scouting for All will find an Adult Gay Eagle Scout who will give you their badge.
